When Freewing set out to develop the Version 2, their goal was to improve upon the best-selling F-18 V1 by making it easier to build, stronger, and even more scale. They achieved these goals by providing a bolt together" airframe, adding carbon reinforcement to the main wings and stabilizers.

The aluminium landing gear is sprung to absorb some of the landing loads and is completely retractable (The front Landing Gear is also housed behind operating Gear doors!). The landing gear in this jet have been upgraded to "servo-less retracts" and do not require any end point adjustment; they are actuated by small electric motors and worm drives, and operate at a scale-like speed without the need for any slow-down modules. Included as an extra bonus on this limited edition Aussie Hornet is a 7-LED Midnight Flyer lighting system with bright red, green and white LEDs all pre-installed.
