Welcome the new Super Scale F-14D Tomcat by Freewing model! Never before has an electric F-14 been produced in this size and with this high a degree of scale fidelity and quality. Easily one of the most beloved jets in history, we hare especially excited to offer this thrilling F-14D Tomcat.
The team at Freewing Model worked tirelessly to develop an RC model which brings the excitement and scale performance of this hallmark aircraft to your local flying field and to appropriately honor the F-14 Tomcat v2's rightful place in aviation history. We chose to depict 'Bullet 101', the specially marked F-14D from the VF-2 squadron 'Bounty Hunters', which was painted in the mid-1990s to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the F-14's service in the United States Navy. This rendition of 'Bullet 101' is an appropriate salute to all the personnel who served alongside this breathtaking aircraft throughout its 32 year service to all country.
The signature feature of the real F-14 is its sweeping wing, and we've worked to design this model around this function as well. Where previous foam F-14 models failed, This F-14 succeeds. This is due to the lightweight aluminum "Wing Box" which supports a rigid wing in both forward and swept configurations. A sloppy wing can be dangerous and so this F-14 was designed around the Wing Box to distribute the loads across the fuselage and ensure the model could consistently withstand high speed maneuvers without needing any maintenance and adjustment to the wing sweeping mechanisms. The wings pivot on flat bearings to reduce resistance and wear. Electric servoless actuators extend and sweep the wings along a four second span using steel control rods and brass ball links. The result of this design is a dependable, maintenance-free, durable wing sweep feature which when used with our recommended control settings provides pilots with a worthy F-14 flying experience without the worry traditionally associated with swing wing models.
Scale fidelity, surface details, and builder-friendliness were also specific areas of focus. The PNP model arrives with the main fuselage completely assembled. All the electronics-servos, EDFs, ESCs,UBEC,retracts, and lights-are completely installed at the factory for the PNP variant. The builder simply needs to screw on the wings and tail surfaces, affix the upper wing box plates with the provided Allen bolts, epoxy on the forward nose section, pop on the magnetic nose cone, and then glue the assorted surface details like the ventral fins, wing fences, antennas, pitot tube, etc. Bind your receiver (not included) to the pre-labeled connections, match the recommended settings, and you're ready to fly! The decision to add this F-14D to your fleet will be an easy and resounding 'Yes!'.
To further simplify the wiring and setup, this F-14 incorporates an onboard mixing circuit board which controls all the servos, taileron/aileron mixing, wing sweeping, and the lighting package. "Day-Bright" LEDs are used throughout the aircraft for realistic lighting. With six static outputs and three flashing outputs, pilots can arrange their LEDs to keep the wingtip and wingroot lights on all the time and leave the tail lights to flash intermittently, or experiment with other combinations. The wing box and circuit board are accessed by removing a single cover with six screws for convenient adjustment of all these features if ever needed.
While the complexity of this F-14D make it the largest, most impressive, and heaviest EDF jet avaialble at www.frewing-model.com, the aircraft uses two 80mm 12 blade EDFs and two 6s 4000mAh batteries which can propel it through the sky at 170 Kph. While 170Kph is good, we would not consider this a 'speed jet'. The deisgn specifically focused on slow flight stability in order to widen the model's controllable flight envelope. The model can cruise at 60% throttle, can turn at 40% throttle even with the wings swept rearward, and can land at less than 60Kph with full flaps for safely controlled landings on the reinforced landing gear and aluminum compression struts. The F-14D's two powerplants utilize the same 1750kv outrunner and 80A ESC which have proven themselves in the 80mm class of jets for a great balance between thrust, weight, efficiency, and flight duration. The EDF's rigid metal shroud, combined with 12 blades instead of the tradition 6, provides a pleasing 'whoosh' sound as the model rushes by instead of the usual high pitched 'whine'. An 8 amp UBEC supplies the ten servos with dependable power to all systems.
Intended as a "Scale Plus" flyer, this F-14D excels in scale maneuvers and stability throughout its flight envelope. This model EDF jet flies more like a true turbine jet and less like a smaller low wing loaded foam jet. Accordingly, we recommend this aircraft for Expert level pilots who have proficient experience operating large 90mm jets at airfields with sufficient clearance (>1,500 feet long x >800 feet deep) and runway surface appropriate for a large foam jet. Pavement, mat, artificial turf, or smoothly rolled/compacted dirt are preferred. For operation on a grass runway, a smooth surface no taller than 1' is recommended. Compared to some of Freewing's other 90mm jets, the F-14 is closest to the F-16 and ME-262 in handling. With full flaps deployed, we clocked the F-14's average safe landing speed at -65kph, and we clocked an average top speed of about 170kph in level flight. With mixed throttle, two 6s 4000mAh 40-60c batteries provide 3-3.5 minutes of safe flight.
Note: The optional weapons set as shown in the photos is available separately and is not included with the PNP or KIT+ aircraft. The initial weapon set as pictured is called "Standard Patrol", and includes the pylons and mounting hardware for the two AIM-54 Phoenix, two AIM-7 Sparrow, and two AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles. A "Medium Range Interceptor" weapon set is also planned in the future. Its availability is TBD. The weapons sets do add weight and lots of drag, which decreases the model's top speed.
